Following her acclaimed tribute to Ethel Merman, Klea Blackhurst has turned her passion for musical theatre history toward the checkered Broadway career of composer Vernon Duke. "Infusing Duke's songs with oxygen" (NY Times), Klea performs forgotten gems as well as beloved Duke treasures from her newly released CD. "Between her powerful pipes, intelligent and humorous patter, and sublime lyrical interpretations, this is one of those rare 'must rush-out-and-see' shows that you will kick yourself for missing." (Talkin'Broadway.com) "Simply sensational." (Next Magazine)

Klea heads to the historic Shubert Theater in New Haven to play Reno Sweeney, the evangelist turned nightclub singer, in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes! Often cited as the quintessential musical comedy of the 1930’s, it was Ethel Merman’s first project with Porter. (They would ultimately do five shows.) They liked each other immediately, much to everyone’s surprise. They were an unlikely duo, the Yale man and the girl from Astoria. Porter said “she sounds like an entire band going by!” He also said he’d rather write songs for her than for anyone else in the entire world. Besides the title song, he gave Merman I Get A Kick Out of You, Blow Gabriel Blow and You’re The Top in Anything Goes. The show is giddy, romantic and glorious!

Klea is tickled to be returning to Flat Rock as they open their 51st season with Everything The Traffic Will Allow. When asked how she’ll make the show more theatrical, Klea replied, “I’ll put it in a theatre.” This spiffy production will take advantage of all the Playhouse has to offer. There will be an intermission, a costume change, a sparkling set and a new section devoted to Merman’s two shows with Irving Berling. Oh yes, Klea will also be playing 8 performances a week. This should be interesting…

ROYAL ALBERT HALL
OKLAHOMA! (BBC PROMS)
Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms.
This concert version of Oklahoma! starring Klea as Ado Annie was part of the BBC Proms tribute to Richard Rodgers and his centenary year. Klea was honored to be joined onstage by conductor David Charles Abell, Maureen Lipman, Lisa Vroman, Brent Barrett, Tim Flavin, and Karl Daymond. Set in the splendor of London's Royal Albert Hall, the performance received a tremendous response from the sold-out crowd. It was broadcast live via BBC radio and webcast, and televised the following day on BBC2. The Times subsequently gave a wonderful nod to Klea in the August 19th feature by Richard Morrison: "...and Klea Blackhurst achieved the near-impossible - deft comic timing in the Albert Hall - as Ado Annie, the girl who can t say no." Who could ask for anything more?
